Friday 21 August 2026 marked a significant milestone in the history of Taranaki Māori

as whānau, former trustees, kaimahi, iwi representatives, and community leaders

gathered at the Devon Hotel in New Plymouth to celebrate the enduring legacy of the

Taranaki Māori Trust Board.

Held under the theme "He Taonga Tuku Iho –Honouring the Past. Celebrating the Legacy. Embracing the

Future," the evening provided an opportunity to reflect on the Board's nearly century long contribution to the wellbeing and advancement of whānau, hapū and iwi throughout Taranaki.

For generations, the Taranaki Māori Trust Board helped carry the aspirations of our people, advocating for Māori interests and supporting initiatives that strengthened communities across the region. The celebration acknowledged the many rangatira, trustees, kaimahi, and whānau whose leadership, commitment, and service helped shape the Board's whakapapa and enduring impact.

The evening brought together current and former board members, stakeholders, PSGE

representatives, and descendants of those who served before us. Historic photographs,

stories, and shared memories provided a powerful reminder of the people and milestones

that have shaped the journey of the Trust Board over the past 96 years. Public reporting

from the event highlighted the strong sense of connection felt by attendees as they

reflected on the contributions of previous generations and their enduring influence on

Taranaki today.

Importantly, the celebration was not only about looking back. It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the transition to Te Tōpuni Ngārahu, the collective entity representing the

eight iwi of Taranaki, and the next chapter of regional leadership and collaboration. As

attendees reflected on the legacy of the Trust Board, attention also turned toward the

future and the opportunities ahead for future generations.

As the evening concluded, there was a shared sense of gratitude for those who paved the way and a renewed commitment to carrying their vision forward. The stories,

achievements, and contributions celebrated that night remain a taonga tuku iho for the people of

Taranaki.

To all those who have served, supported, and strengthened the Taranaki Māori Trust

Board over its long history, tēnā koutou. Your legacy continues to guide and inspire us.
