Taiao

The Te Tōpuni Ngārahu Taiao Unit works with the Department of Conservation to ensure operational management of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki is consistent with the planning  framework established under Te Ture Whakatupua mō Te Kāhui Tupua 2025 and Te Ruruku Pūtakerongo. This requires active and ongoing involvement of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki as uri of Te Kāhui Tupua.

Outside Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, the Taiao Unit provides targeted support to post settlement governance entities (PSGE’s) to protect and enhance regional environmental and cultural wellbeing by working with restoration partners and relevant delivery agencies. The Unit focuses on leadership, advocacy, planning support, and collaboration to ensure that mātauranga Māori and kaitiakitanga are embedded in decision-making practices for the taiao. The utilisation of the latest technologies grounded in a tikanga foundation will be critical to achieving these outcomes.

Guided by a vision of punawai koropupū (quality environments), our work comprises strategic planning, spatial data collection and analysis, resource management support, and the facilitation of collaborative partnerships which contribute to restoring a healthy and resilient Taranaki taiao.

  • Where requested, we provide strategic advice and support to Taranaki PSGEs on resource management matters, regulatory processes, and environmental issues. This includes advocacy across central and local government policy and legislation, as well as leading the development and implementation of He Kawa Ora mō Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, the Cultural Materials Plan, and relationship agreements that strengthen iwi and stakeholder partnerships.

  • We develop and maintain spatial evidence to inform planning advice, identify cultural and ecological priorities, guide restoration sequencing, and support monitoring and reporting across the Taranaki landscape.

  • We provide coordination and partnership support across the Taranaki Maunga Limited (TML) Alliance, bringing together people, organisations, and delivery partners to achieve shared restoration outcomes and strengthen collaboration across the wider restoration network.

Event Management and Support

Over the last two years, Te Tōpuni Ngārahu has delivered and supported a range of national and regional initiatives on behalf of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki and kaupapa Māori organisations. Through specialist project management, advocacy, and strategic support, our team helps bring significant cultural, community, and regional projects to life, creating lasting benefits for iwi, whānau, and the wider Taranaki community.

See examples of our work here:

  • Fifty-three kapa haka groups from across Aotearoa and Te Whenua Moemoea came to Taranaki for Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga in early-2025. What began with a poi pōwhiri from Te Kāhui Maunga, was followed by five competition days held at Pukekura Park, Ngāmotu. Hosted by Te Kāhui Maunga, Te Ranga Tūpua and Ngā Iwi o Taranaki, the manaakitanga of our rohe was on full display to the more than 70,000 guests and participants of the festival.

  • Taranaki Tū Mai is the premier gathering of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki, creating opportunities for uri to reconnect, strengthen relationships, and celebrate shared cultural identity through sport and cultural activities. The 2025 event, hosted by Te Kāhui o Taranaki in Ōpunake, welcomed more than 5,000 participants across over 30 events. Te Tōpuni Ngārahu played a key role in supporting the event's planning, coordination, and operational delivery, helping ensure a successful experience for participants, whānau, and hosts.

  • The inaugural National Māori Energy Summit brought together more than 280 delegates from across the energy sector, iwi, and Māori entities to advance conversations about Māori-led energy futures in Aotearoa. Held in Ngāmotu in October 2025, the two-day summit provided a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective action. Te Tōpuni Ngārahu partnered with the National Iwi Chairs Forum to support the planning, coordination, and successful delivery of the event.

  • Te Matoe o te Reo supports the ongoing growth of te reo Māori as a vibrant and living language by creating a platform for learning, collaboration, and celebration. Now in its fifth year, the event brings together whānau, teachers, communities, and reo champions from across Te Tai Hau-ā-Uru to share knowledge, recognise achievement, and strengthen intergenerational language transmission. Te Tōpuni Ngārahu played a key role in delivering the event through programme development, strategic marketing, stakeholder engagement, speaker management, event coordination, and operational management.
