The restoration and protection of Te Kāhui Tupua is a collective endeavour grounded in the enduring relationship between Ngā Iwi o Taranaki and our tūpuna maunga. Over the past decade, this journey has been supported through the work of Taranaki Mounga Project Limited, an ambitious landscape-scale restoration initiative that brought together iwi, communities, government agencies, philanthropic partners, researchers and environmental organisations in a shared commitment to restoring the ecological vitality of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki and the wider Taranaki landscape. Through predator elimination, habitat restoration and species recovery programmes, the project helped strengthen the ecological resilience of the maunga and demonstrated the power of collective action in achieving long-term environmental outcomes - He Kawa Ora.
Building on this legacy, Taranaki Maunga Limited has been established as a part of the Te Tōpuni Ngārahu Group as a vehicle to advance the aspirations of Te Kāhui Tupua. Its role is to bring people together, facilitate collaboration and create pathways for partners to contribute to shared ecological outcomes. By connecting iwi, communities, agencies, funders, researchers and other stakeholders, Taranaki Maunga Limited continues to build trust, momentum and collective investment in the long-term health and wellbeing of the maunga. Rather than acting alone, it serves as a trusted broker and connector, aligning people, expertise and resources around a common vision for future generations.
Giving Effect to Te Kāhui Tupua
The enactment of Te Ture Whakatupua mō Te Kāhui Tupua 2025 established a new framework for recognising Te Kāhui Tupua as a living and indivisible whole and for protecting its health and wellbeing into the future. The legislation created Te Tōpuni Kōkōrangi, the statutory body responsible for acting as the face and voice of Te Kāhui Tupua and for upholding the priorities, responsibilities and intentions set out within the redress framework.
Working in support of Te Tōpuni Kōkōrangi, Taranaki Maunga Limited plays a critical implementation role. While Te Tōpuni Kōkōrangi provides the strategic direction and accountability established through the legislation, Taranaki Maunga Limited helps translate those priorities and initiatives into action by connecting partners, enabling initiatives and facilitating collaboration across the landscape. In doing so, it creates opportunities for organisations, communities and individuals to contribute to the aspirations of Te Kāhui Tupua and participate in their ongoing care and protection.
